Luminate impresses in stamina test for Highclere Thoroughbreds

Highclere Thoroughbreds took the Prix De Conde when Freddy Head's Lawman filly Luminate followed her debut success at Deauville by seeing off the colts in style with a three-length defeat of Kingstar in the 1m1f Group 3.

Charlie Appleby's Stage Magic, the most experienced member of the field but carrying a penaty for last month's Group 3 defeat of Olmedo in the mile Prix de Chenes, also at Chantilly, trailed home last of six, with no immediate excuse.

Jockey James Doyle said: "It's a bit of a head scratcher. Stage Magic got off on the lead as usual and travelled away into the straight quite sweetly.

"The ground was very testing, but he shouldn't have minded that, so we'll do a few checks and I'd be surprised if something doesn't come up to explain it."

Appleby and Doyle had begun the day on the right note when Dream Warrior, a Dubawi colt out of I'm A Dreamer, had landed the opening maiden by a nose.

Doyle said: "He's a nice colt and did well to win in what was a messy race."

In between, Roger Varian's recent Ascot winner Cape Byron could finish no closer than third behind Glen Shiel in the Listed Prix Le Fabuleux, in which Appleby's D'Bai was fifth.

A strong British challenge for the Criterium De Vitesse was also thwarted, although the Joe Tuite-trained outsider Looks A Million excelled herself in third behind Beau Ideal.
