Laccario proves too good for Surrey Thunder in Deutsches Derby
An impressive performance from 2-1 favourite Laccario gave trainer Andreas Wohler a fifth win the Group 1 Deutsches Derby at Hamburg, with the Joseph Tuite-trained Surrey Thunder back in fifth under Jason Watson.
Lambourn-based Tuite has campaigned Surrey Racing's three-year-old exclusively overseas so far this season, and was satisfied with what he saw from the son of Le Havre, who was pipped for a position in the placings inside the final furlong.
Tuite said: "I thought he ran well and that he's run the same form he showed at Baden-Baden last time. We gave it go and we just were not good enough on the day.
"Moving forward we've got different options but it was all about how he got on today. He might be a bit ground-dependent and bit more juice in the ground certainly helps him.
"We've got a few ideas moving forward but we just want to get him home first and then decide. We will certainly lower our sights now from that run. He hasn't run a bad race but you just wanted him to run better I suppose."
The winner finished a length and a quarter ahead of Django Freeman with the Markus Klug-trained Accon a further length and a quarter back in third.
