Horses affected by Hurricane Harvey offered free stabling at Houston track

Hurricane Harvey has led to mass evacuations in the Houston area, and it is not just people who need temporary rehoming, with Sam Houston Race Park offering free stabling.

The racetrack, which is located northwest of downtown Houston, has not sustained any major damage or flooding from the storm, so has been able to open its doors for horses that have been displaced by the flooding.

With no racing scheduled at the track until January, the barns at the track are free, and around 100 horses are now being stabled.

Roland Tamez, who is part of Sam Houston's security team, told the Blood-Horse: "These stalls do not have gates. So horse owners need to provide a gate or stall webbing, hay, feed, bedding, tubs, and buckets. The track is providing water."

Sam Houston's track president Andrea Young reported that the barn area will be made available for as long as necessary.

Several states on the Gulf Coast have been battered by Hurricane Harvey, including Louisiana, and at Delta Downs, the track's backstretch has been opened to accommodate horses from a nearby training centre that flooded.
