Gold Trip lays down Jockey Club claim with smooth success in Greffulhe
Gold Trip put in a polished display to land the relocated Prix Greffulhe, earning himself a likely crack at the Prix du Jockey Club on July 5.
Stephane Pasquier tracked the pacesetting Mkfancy around the tighter turns of Lyon, compared to the usual venue of Saint-Cloud, and found a willing response when unleashing Gold Trip at the entrance to the home straight.
Influx ran on well from the back to snatch second having won only a Salon-de-Provence maiden previously, while the once-raced In Swoop made up the podium.
Gold Trip had performed well in three previous starts without getting his head in front and this victory paid tribute to his recent Saint-Cloud conqueror, Port Guillaume.
Trainer Fabrice Chappet said: "His debut run over a mile at Deauville last October was good and then he ran fine when the ground was very heavy. Last time he was only beaten by a very good horse and he has progressed again as expected."
While the Greffulhe has a good recent record as a trial for the Jockey Club, the Prix Cleopatre/Prix de Diane double was last done in 1976.
That won't bother Cedric Rossi one bit after Neige Blanche sprang a surprise in overhauling favourite Flighty Lady.
Rossi is the nephew of Poule d'Essai des Pouliches-winning trainer Frederic, while Neige Blanche was bred by his father Jacques.
