The Melbourne Cup Carnival will be a momentous one for the man known as 'The Keeper of the Roses'.

Terry Freeman, Flemington's senior grounds and gardens manager, will retire at the end of the carnival following 43 years of service at the course.

There were 6,000 roses on course when Freeman joined. There are now more than 16,000 with Freeman's affinity with the plant growing over the years.
