Dubai World Cup runner-up Gronkowski aimed at new $20m Saudi Cup
Dubai World Cup runner-up Gronkowski has become one of the first horses declared on course for the Saudi Cup, the world's richest race.
Phoenix Thoroughbreds' four-year-old, who was beaten just a nose by Thunder Snow at Meydan last March, is set to bid for the new $20 million contest next February.
And the big-spending investment team who own Gronkowski also hope to be represented by Axelrod in the lucrative 1m1f event, which is restricted to 14 runners.
Phoenix Thoroughbreds vice-president Tom Ludt said: "Obviously Phoenix has jumped into the international market in a big way and we are very supportive of the international game.
"Things like this are what the game is all about and we will be extremely supportive. Gronkowski and Axelrod are both sitting in Dubai right now resting and getting ready to get back to full form, and our intention is to have both of those run.
"We are very excited and we think this is what the international game needs. We’re international players, so we're very much supportive and god willing if there good they'll be there, if not we’ll find someone else!"
Phoenix's three-time Group 1 winner Advertise could warm up for the Qipco British Champions Sprint Stakes by bidding for the 32Red Sprint Cup at Haydock, with Martyn Meade cool on a potential return visit to France for the Prix Maurice de Gheest scorer.
"The Prix de la Foret is a possibility but I don't think it's terribly high on the list of priorities," the trainer said.
"We'll have to have a look at the Haydock race, it depends on who we have to take on. There's no reason why he shouldn't run another one or two times, he's come out of the French race in good form, he's bouncing and he's always a really sound horse."
Advertise has been made 9-2 second favourite for the Champions Sprint by Paddy Power, behind his July Cup conqueror Ten Sovereigns (7-2).
