Deep Impact continued his recent global domination when his son Wagnerian landed a first Grade 1 success in the Japanese Derby under Yuichi Fukunaga.

The Yasuo Tomomichi-trained colt reversed his five-and-three-quarter-length defeat when seventh in the Satsuki Sho (Japanese 2,000 Guineas) last month with Epoca D'Oro, who finished a half length second here.

He was drawn wide but was patiently ridden in midfield before taking closer order around the home turn. He caught Satsuki Sho winner Epoca D'Oro in the final stages.

Yasuo Tomomichi, who won the Dubai Turf last year with Vivlos, said the Japanese Derby was always the aim.

"When he won on his debut, I was keen to aim him for the Derby," he said. "In the Satsuki Sho I trained him carefully so he didn't get wound up for this race. Yuichi thought he would be an ideal type for the Derby."

Tomomichi added: "He's now going to have a break over the summer and then we will discuss his target for autumn."
