Channon jnr lifts Sydney Cup as Shraaoh seals Waller's amazing day with big win
The Charlie Appleby-trained Dubhe flopped as hot favourite for the Sydney Cup, but there was still more than one British link to the winner.
Shraaoh was successful for both Sir Michael Stoute and Harry Fry before joining Chris Waller, whose 101st Group 1 winner is looked after by Mick Channon jnr, now one of the superstar trainer's strappers.
"This is ridiculous," said Racing Post columnist Channon. "I've only been here for six months and I can't quite believe this has happened. This is mad.
"For ages now I've been saying to the lads this horse could complete the Sydney-Melbourne Cup double. They took the mickey out of me when he got beat last week. Now I'll give them hell!"
Shraaoh edged out Vengeur Masque to take the £729,005 first prize, but Dubhe could manage only 12th under Kerrin McEvoy, who said: "He was sluggish out of the gates and never travelled at all."
Waller had preceded the wins of Winx and Shraaoh by netting his 99th Group 1, this time with Verry Elleegant, who took the Heineken 3 Australian Oaks under James McDonald with considerable authority.
It was a far less enjoyable day for jockey Andrew Adkins, who suffered a horrible fall in the opening race and later used social media to reveal that, among numerous injuries, he had suffered three fractures to his spine.
Mark Zahra received a 25-meeting ban for causing the incident.
