Britain's champion jockey Oisin Murphy has ridden 60 winners in Japan, including the 2019 Japan Cup on Suave Richard. Here he gives his guide to riding Chukyo, venue for Sunday's Takamatsunomiya Kinen.


Chukyo is left-handed, very flat and quite fair. Given the pace on the dirt in particular you can often win by making the running.

Back in December I rode a horse called Time Flyer in the Group 1 Champions Cup that Chrysoberyl won. I rode him sensibly but got too far back and then didn't get the splits in the straight. I should have ridden him more aggressively. He lines up in a Group 3 at Nakayama this weekend and should take all the beating from an outside draw.
