Best hoping trio can set up a tilt at big prizes on the snow

St Moritz, complete with the fastest start ramp on the global tour, has hosted the 2017 World Ski Championships and on Sunday puts on more hair-raising action – this time in equine form.

Racing on the 'white turf' takes place on a frozen lake, limiting the season to three Sundays a year, of which this will be the second, and has become something of an annual voyage for Kent-based trainer John Best.

He has brought over three horses this year: the returning Berrahri, third in last year's Grosser Preis von St Moritz, Gung Ho Jack and Eddystone Rock, who had their first taste of the snow last weekend.

"We come every year now, but it's mostly about the final meeting as that's when there's a lot of prize-money," said Best.

"Last weekend they were all slightly disappointing but for two of them it was their first time on the ice and the other had too much weight and is suffering for doing well last year.

"He was third in the Grand Prix last year and had to carry 10st 3lb last weekend. He's got less tomorrow but he is running in a better race."

The trainer added: "I hope they can all run reasonable races and set themselves up for next weekend."
