Beckett pair denied as Hungarian raider Nancho claims Grosser Preis von Bayern
The final European Group 1 of the season was won by Hungarian-trained Nancho, denying the Ralph Beckett-trained Manuela De Vega in the Waldgeist Grosser Preis von Bayern at Munich on Sunday.
Beckett sent two runners for the event in an attempt to become the first British-trained winner since Campanologist in 2010 but had to settle for second with the Rob Hornby-partnered Manuela De Vega.
His other runner Antonia De Vega, who was strongly fancied after her good run behind Star Catcher on Champions Day at Ascot last month, ran on to finish fourth under Harry Bentley.
Beckett, delighted that both fillies stay in training next year, said: "The winner kicked early in the straight and just didn't stop but they both ran really well. Antonia De Vega could have probably done with a slightly stronger pace and the other filly ran her race."
Nancho made all under his Mongolian jockey Bayarsaikhan Ganbat, who was winning his first top-level race in Europe.
Although his wide-margin lead was being diminished quickly in the final furlong, Nancho held on in a close finish for an 11th career success from 18 starts.
The result continued an unlucky campaign for Manuela De Vega, whose neck defeat means she has been runner-up on four of her seven starts.
Ashrun fared best of the local runners, finishing another neck behind in third with Anotnia De Vega a head away in fourth.
