Atzeni enjoys homecoming triumph in Italian 2,000 Guineas as Boitron disappoints
Report: Italy, Sunday
Capannelle: Premio Parioli Shadwell (Group 3) 1m, turf, 3yo colts
Andrea Atzeni won Italy's 2,000 Guineas on Out Of Time at the Capannelle on Sunday as veteran trainer Alduino Botti saddled the first three home in the €154,000 Classic, with favourite Mission Boy (Carlo Fiocchi) and Pensiero d'Amore (Dario Vargiu) filling the places.
British-trained raider Boitron (Richard Hannon/Rossa Ryan), who sweated up considerably and was pressed for the lead throughout, folded inside the final two furlongs and finished last, one place behind the Frankie Dettori-ridden Foot Of King.
Atzeni had been happy to bide his time on Out Of Time, waiting towards the rear and asking his mount to close from over two furlongs out. A strong run inside the final furlong saw them head Mission Boy with 75 yards to run and quickly take control.
Out Of Time, who has been a one-length fourth to Mission Boy in the Group 2 Gran Criterium in October but had won a trial nicely this spring, has stamina in his pedigree and races as if a step up in trip would not go amiss, so the Derby Italiano on May 19 is very much on the cards according to connections.
Also on Sunday
Capannelle: Premio Regina Elena (Group 3) 1m, turf, 3yo fillies
Gerard Mosse picked up the Italian 1,000 Guineas on Fullness Of Life, completing a Guineas double for trainer Alduino Botti, with Intense Battle (Marco Gasparini/Dario Di Tocca) and Dehara (Rinaldo Boccardelli/Christian Di Napoliu) taking the minor honours.
Fullness Of Life ran out a decisive winner and has now won three of her five starts (finishing second in the other two) and while connections have not ruled out the Oaks d'Italia, she is bred to be at her best at around a mile.
In contrast to his success in the colts' race, Atzeni was last here on Stone Tornado.
