Hurricane Lane's Dante display raises fans' hopes of big points haul to come
There can be no doubt about the most popular winner of the week after Palace Pier, who appears in 80 per cent of Tote Ten To Follow entries, romped home in the Lockinge Stakes to earn followers 27.32 points.
He may prove essential to a successful team but some of the week’s other winners could be important in making the difference required to support a challenge. So while 54 per cent of stables were cheering for disappointing favourite High Definition in York’s Dante Stakes, the two per cent who included the winner Hurricane Lane have 27.10 points and the prospect of a genuine Derby contender on their side.
Similarly, the 6.7 per cent who sided with Al Aasy will have been delighted with the 17.70 points gained by his easy win in Newbury’s Aston Park Stakes and the prospect it offered of many more to come.
Neither Palace Pier or Al Aasy topped the scoring at Newbury on Saturday, with Ascension, found by two players, causing an upset in the concluding handicap to land 27.90 points.
At York, two sprinters who could be Royal Ascot-bound impressed, with Starman taking the Duke of York Stakes to earn 3.8 per cent of stables 27.4 points and Winter Power landing the Westow Stakes and 19.2 points for 19 teams.
At Longchamp, St Mark’s Basilica, who figures in 20.6 per cent of stables, took the Poule d’Essai des Poulains for 32.9 points.
He moves into third spot in the list of leading scorers, just behind Mother Earth, who narrowly failed to follow up her 1,000 Guineas success in the Poule d’Essai des Pouliches.
Also at Longchamp, last year’s Arc runner-up In Swoop signalled he will be a significant force in the season’s big middle-distance prizes starting with the Coronation Cup, with a Prix d’Hedouville victory which bagged 3.1 per cent of stables 17.7 points.
