Jockeys’ championship leader Brian Hughes has had his three-day ban for weighing in light put on hold while the BHA investigates the circumstances around the incident.

Hughes, who leads injured reigning champion Richard Johnson in his bid to secure a first title, weighed in 5lb light at Carlisle after riding Bingo D’Olivate to victory, with trainer James Ewart also fined £750.

An appeal had been launched by Hughes, who had been set to miss March 2-4 inclusive, but the whole process has been put on hold after the BHA stayed the proceedings on Friday.

A BHA statement said: “The suspensions and fines in relation to this horse weighing in light have been temporarily stayed pending further investigation into the exact cause of the underweight.

“As a result the BHA will not be offering further comment in relation to this matter.”
