HRI focused on enhancing the support networks available to industry people
Horse Racing Ireland remains focused on increasing the awareness about the free and confidential support networks which are available 24 hours a day for industry people suffering from mental health issues or simply going through tough times.
That's the message coming from Patrick Ryan, co-ordinator of the Careers and Racing Education (CARE) department within HRI, who is one of the driving forces behind spreading the word about the new Industry Assistance Programme and the support networks available to people in the industry.
The IAP is completely independent and confidential from HRI and it is delivered by an organisation called Workplace Options, who recently launched the iConnectYou app, which is available to download from the Apple Store or from Google Play.
Speaking about the project, Ryan said: "We've been busy spreading the word about the support networks on offer all summer and have written to trainers, stud farms and anybody we could think of really with information leaflets and informative posters and for their tack rooms, offices, etc.
"We're keen to get the word out there and to remind everyone that we're here if needed, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
"The app was launched earlier this summer and it's been popular. Having said that, we haven't seen huge numbers either, which is also good for obvious reasons."
He added: "The app is a really smart initiative. I know some people would find it easier to look for support through text rather than speaking to somebody over the phone as it may be a less daunting way of coming forward and looking for help. One to one counselling can also be arranged."
