How Wednesday's action could impact the betting for the Derby and the Oaks
The 2021 Flat season is well under way and it's full steam ahead to the first of the Irish Classics this month – the Tattersalls Irish 2,000 Guineas and Tattersalls Irish 1,000 Guineas – and next month's Epsom Classics, the Cazoo Derby and Cazoo Oaks.
Market movers come thick and fast as the key Classic trials are run in Britain and Ireland, but big-race contenders can come from anywhere and it's easy to miss a potential dark horse. Classic Clues, our new series running every morning, has you covered.
Here's a recap of Tuesday's action and how it's impacted the Classic betting, while we mark your card with key names to note today.
Racing round-up: Derby line-up looks clearer
A total of 29 top colts remain on track for the Cazoo Derby at the latest stage of confirmations, which were revealed on Tuesday. Leading fancies Bolshoi Ballet, High Definition, Mohaafeth and Hurricane Lane all featured.
News from Newmarket emerged on Tuesday afternoon that key Derby fancy Mohaafeth could miss his Classic chance, though, if the ground were to go soft at Epsom in early June.
Mohaafeth drifted slightly in the betting following the comments from trainer William Haggas, with Betway making him 6-1 (from 11-2).
Meanwhile, Ed Dunlop confirmed 8-1 shot John Leeper would also be aimed at the famous Classic. He passed his trial with flying colours on Saturday when winning a muddling Fairway Stakes in fine style and, as a son of the brilliant mare Snow Fairy, is expected to continue improving this season.
All eyes on Cork
Tazaral does not have an entry in the Derby but this smartly bred type is certainly one to watch in a competitive mile maiden at Cork (3.45) on Wednesday afternoon.
He is a half-brother to the stable's hugely talented Tarnawa, who put her 2019 Oaks defeat well behind her when recording a Group 1 hat-trick at the end of last season.
It took Tarnawa four starts to get off the mark so perhaps a better showing is expected of Tazaral after his eighth-place finish on his debut.
His opposition includes Grid and Handel, who head to cork on the back of some useful placed efforts.
