Hogan fails in bid to get 42-day ban for mare overturned
Denis Hogan had his appeal against the 42-day suspension handed out to his mare Meadow Cross under rule 212 dismissed but received half of his deposit (€250) back at a Turf Club hearing on Thursday.
Meadow Cross finished fourth on her chasing debut at Down Royal last month but the stewards on the evening were of the opinion that Shane Mulcahy did not make sufficient effort in the saddle.
The appeals body were happy with the decision made by the raceday stewards and dismissed the appeal in what was a swift hearing at Turf Club headquarters on the Curragh.
Mulcahy did not appeal his five-day riding ban and Hogan was not found guilty of any wrongdoing.
Earlier on Thursday morning, the appeals panel – chairman Joseph Finnegan, Robert Dore and John Powell – met to consider the appeal of Shane Foley over an incident at Fairyhouse on July 5 that led to a seven-day ban under rule 272.
Foley was charged with bringing racing into disrepute after hitting the Noel Meade-trained Weightfordave twice behind the saddle prior to entering the stalls for the fairyhouse.ie Handicap.
The panel were satisfied that Foley was in breach of rule 272 but, considering the Wexford native's previous good record, they decided to reduce the ban to five days.
Foley’s deposit was refunded in full and his ban restricts him from race-riding on July 19, 20, 22, 23 and 24.
