Classic clues in the first week of November are typically saved for the Breeders' Cup but Khalid Abdullah homebred Headman caused a stir at Newcastle on Thursday night with a striking debut victory in the mile novice contest.

The Roger Charlton-trained son of Kingman was backed into 8-13 favourite and travelled powerfully before drawing readily clear of solid yardstick Repaupo in the manner of an exciting prospect for next year.

Such was the impression he made, Headman is as short as 25-1 for the Qipco 2,000 Guineas in places – with bet365 a standout 40-1 – and those prices could come under further scrutiny before the month is out.
