Second, Newbury, Friday

Calling The Wind travelled strongly in this 1m4f handicap, but given he won over more than a mile further at Goodwood the time before, it did not look a good move from jockey Pat Dobbs to wait until the final furlong.

With a length to find on Makram, who had also travelled powerfully, before being asked for a full effort, Calling The Wind just failed and was also carried right late on by the winner.

Even so, the Richard Hughes-trained Calling The Wind improved again from his new mark of 100, running a tremendous race over the much shorter trip, and is progressing into a smart, versatile sort.

The five-year-old is one of the favourites for the Cesarewitch, but he is also in the Long Distance Cup at Ascot, where he has a good record, and would be a lively outsider for that race.

Wootton'Sun
Third, Ayr, Friday

Wootton'Sun, who has shown improved form with each of his three starts, confirmed he is one to take into nursery company judged on his staying-on third at Ayr's Western meeting.

Despite dropping in distance in a race that wasn't run at a breakneck pace, the son of Wootton Bassett, who was tapped for toe at a crucial stage, caught the eye with his finishing effort to finish within striking distance of the unexposed Green Team.

Everything about Wootton'Sun's pedigree and the way he ran here suggests he will be very well suited by longer distances and, given he is likely to get a mark somewhere in the mid-70s, he should be able to win races when granted a stiffer test of stamina.

Thornaby Pearl
Seventh, Ayr, Friday

The one to take out of a competitive Bronze Cup was the Adrian Nicholls-trained Thornaby Pearl, who was drawn in stall 19 and fared best of those to race towards the near side of a group in which four of the first five home were drawn in single figures.

Nicholls has shown what he can do when he gets the right ammunition through the exploits of Mo Celita, who went from a modest handicapper to Listed winner within the space of four months, winning six times in that period.

Given Thornaby Pearl's two wins have been with a bit of give in the ground, he will be one to keep a close eye on when the ground eases and it's not difficult to envisage him winning from his current mark of 75.

Neptune Legend
Second, Catterick, Saturday

Neptune Legend has been hugely unlucky on his last two starts, both times bumping into horses who were completing a hat-trick.

The Hugo Palmer-trained juvenile had been the only horse to give Noisy Night a race at Kempton at the start of the month and, following a 2lb rise, the same thing happened in this 7f nursery as he was forced to give best to the bang-in-form My Little Tip late on.

As at Kempton, there was a big gap back to the third and Neptune Legend richly deserves to get his head back in front before too long.
