Riding legend Lester Piggott has had his first Covid-19 vaccination close to his home in Switzerland, and is said to have stood out from among other local residents by being "the only one there without a walking stick”.

The 85-year-old, who had a pacemaker fitted at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge three years ago, now spends most of his time in Switzerland, where the impact of the coronavirus pandemic has not been as severe as in Britain.

The nine-time Derby winner recently spoke to his son Jamie, who reported: “Dad is doing fine and had his first Covid jab last week, when he felt a bit strange as he was the only one there without a walking stick.“

He added: “Thankfully the Covid situation is not as bad as it is here, but Dad is taking no chances. Thankfully, British racing is still taking place so he is making plenty of use of both racing channels.”
