'He was an unlucky loser' - last week's horses to follow and names to note
Our expert race-readers watch – and write a descriptive in-running comment for – every horse who runs in Britain and Ireland, and there are three different categories used to denote those who are most appealing with the future in mind.
Members' Club Ultimate subscribers can add the names of the horses mentioned to their Racing Post Horse Tracker and will then receive email alerts when they are entered or declared again.
On their next start, the horses will be flagged in Signposts, which can be found in the Racing Post newspaper or online as part of Members' Club on raceday.
Non-members can sign up here to get the tracker, race replays and in-depth race analysis, as well as exclusive content from our team of tipsters and writers.
Did well in the circumstances
Dark Side
Second, Cork, September 7
Did well on his debut. He was a little awkward out of the stalls and ended up racing on his own on the far side, which may have been deliberate to get the better ground. This Derby entry ran to the line and should improve a good deal. He's a well-bred son of Zoffany, the dam was a Group 3 winner and is a half-sister to Youmzain and Creachadoir.
Harrow
Third, Doncaster, September 8
A winner of the valuable sales race on this day a year ago, had rather lost his way since showing promise in the spring, but he'd been gelded since his last outing and returned to form. He did by far the best of those to be held up and is probably worth marking up as a consequence.
Call Me Ginger
Second, Doncaster, September 11
Back on soft ground, was arguably unlucky as he lost more ground at the start than he was beaten by, and also met a bit of trouble at a crucial stage. He'll be of obvious interest if turned out quickly in the Ayr Silver Cup (won the Bronze version last year).
Albus Anne
Third, Chepstow, September 11
Would likely have given the winner plenty to think about had she not completely blown the start. She's on a fair mark and handles plenty of cut so she's one to keep on side.
Eyecatcher
Klimova
Sixth, Leicester, September 6
Showed promise after a slow start. A half-sister to a couple of winners over middle-distances, including the Listed-placed Ice Sprite, so she should do well over further next year.
Pink Parfait
Third, Catterick, September 6
A £22,000 yearling, who was the sole newcomer and didn't seem to know what was required. She was soon adrift of the field, but came home strongly and should relish an extra furlong, so she looks sure to improve.
Wurkin Ninetofive
Fourth, Carlisle, September 7
Stepped forward from her debut while shaping better than the result, finishing with running left from a long way back. She's one to look out for when qualified for a mark.
Marlay Park
Second, Epsom, September 8
Continues in good order and goes down as an unlucky loser considering he was closing strongly at the line having met trouble. He tends to produce all his best efforts at this track.
King's Castle
Fifth, Epsom, September 8
Was debuting for a new yard and this was a step back in the right direction, having sat well off the pace. He's presumably got a hurdling career in mind, but can be placed to win on the Flat again before that switch.
Promising
Youngest
Won, Leicester, September 6
The first foal of a Canadian Grade 1 winner was moving up smoothly when she got unbalanced and lost a bit of momentum. She quickly got over that, though, and went on to win a shade comfortably, not having to be asked for everything. She looks promising.
Mudskipper
Second, Goodwood, September 6
A neck behind High Honour on his introduction on much quicker ground at Sandown last month, was beaten further by the winner on this occasion, but he shaped with considerable promise and looks a nice prospect for handicaps next year.
