'He should go close to a first win' - three all-weather weekend wagers
With the cold snap likely to claim Saturday's jumps meetings, the only action in Britain and Ireland could be on the all-weather. Three of our experts have picked out their best bets. . .
Mr Funky Monkey
By Harry Wilson
After only five starts Mr Funky Monkey is still unexposed and on the strength of his last two runs, has definitely got a race of this nature in him.
He caught my eye on his handicap debut at this track in November when a staying-on fifth from the rear of the field, in a race where the pace held up, and again on his last start when he was forced widest of all before being beaten just over a length in fourth.
That was strong form for the grade with the third having since won and the second and fifth both filling the runner-up position on their next starts.
The handicapper has dropped him 1lb for that career-best performance so he should go close to a first win off this basement mark.
Harrovian
By Charlie Huggins
Harrovian has form figures of 223 on the all-weather at Lingfield, including when chasing home subsequent King George VI winner Pyledriver in last year’s Churchill Stakes, which is a similar event to what John and Thady Gosden’s six-year-old faces here.
Harrovian was only half a length behind the dual Group 1 winner and was also third at Royal Ascot to Dubai Future, who went on to take the Group 3 Bahrain International Trophy last month. Harrovian clearly has some strong form in the book and William Buick has been booked for the first time.
Harrovian will have to reverse the form with Algiers, who produced a career-best effort on Racing Post Ratings to be beaten a short head over track and trip last time. That was Harrovian’s first run for 134 days, and the gelding has never won off the back of 52 days or more away from the track, so he should come on from that reappearance run.
Crimson King
By Owen Goulding
With form figures of 311321485 at Lingfield, it is fair to say that Crimson King is a bit of a course specialist. He can be quirky, but off his current mark, he is difficult to ignore.
There are some unexposed types in this field, but Crimson King sits 3lb below his last winning rating and on his first start for 200 days, he caught the eye over course and distance this month.
He was caught five-wide on the bend and after losing momentum, he stayed on well in the closing stages to finish fifth. This should be run at a stronger pace, which will suit, and Frederick Larson claims 3lb off his back again.
Larson is likely to stalk the leaders aboard the seasoned six-year-old who can pounce late on for shrewd operator Mick Appleby.
