Harry and Barney go to the top of their classes in awards battle
Godolphin pair Harry Angel and Barney Roy are the big movers in the latest standings for the Cartier Awards.
Following his victory in the Darley July Cup last Saturday, Harry Angel has leapfrogged Caravaggio to top the Champion Sprinter category, while he also makes his first appearance in the top five among the three-year-old colts.
That division is now led by Barney Roy, who came agonisingly close to backing up his St James’s Palace Stakes success when denied narrowly by Ulysses in the Coral-Eclipse this month.
That performance was enough to move him clear of his Ascot victim Churchill, who is due to attempt to get his season back on track in the Qatar Sussex Stakes on August 2.
Barney Roy is also in second place behind triple Group 1 winner Winter in the overall race to be crowned Cartier Horse of the Year.
Points accrued throughout the season produce 30 per cent of the 'electoral college' for the Cartiers – which will be awarded at London’s Dorchester Hotel on November 14 – with the remaining 70 per cent being divided between a panel of racing experts and a popular vote organised by the Racing Post, the Daily Telegraph and ITV Racing.
