Half a century of pure class - five reasons why John Francome is a racing legend
On December 2, 1970 a 17-year-old called John Francome rode his first winner on a horse called Multigrey in a claiming riders' hurdle at Worcester. That day, he was an apprentice for legendary trainer Fred Winter but 15 years later, with 1,138 victories and seven jockeys' titles to his name, Francome retired as an all-time great and the jockey of his generation.
His close friend and rival Peter Scudamore says it is hard to believe there was ever a better jockey than Francome, but it was not just in the saddle where he was an exceptional talent. A glittering broadcasting career on Channel 4 Racing followed alongside a successful stint as a best-selling author, as well as his generous work for the Injured Jockeys Fund.
On the 50th anniversary of his first victory, the Racing Post looks at why a skilful, opinionated and colourful racing icon will always have legendary status within the sport.
