Green light for extension of 'wonderful' scheme to let key workers in for free
Key workers can continue to come racing for free after the Racecourse Association board unanimously agreed to extend the Blue Light Card scheme into next year.
Throughout 2022, the joint-initiative between the RCA and Racing Together has given complimentary admission to NHS workers, those employed by the emergency services and social carers.
All 59 British racecourses have participated, showing their gratitude for those who helped the country through the pandemic.
Over 20,000 people have taken advantage of the scheme – a landmark which will be marked with a celebratory event at Doncaster's BetGoodwin November Handicap meeting a week on Saturday.
RCA raceday experience and communications manager Paul Swain said: "It has been wonderful to welcome so many key workers to the races. The country, and our sport, owes a great deal to these individuals for their tireless work to support each of us.
"The generosity of all racecourses in providing thousands of tickets is a fantastic gesture of thanks. We are grateful for their support, and sincerely hope key workers have had some wonderful days out this year as our guests with more to come in 2023."
Racing Together community engagement manager Lucy Gurney added: "We're so proud of British racing's enthusiasm to say thank you to key and emergency workers through Blue Light tickets.
"To be celebrating 20,000 free tickets taken up through the scheme in year one is a testament to the generosity of racecourses and the popularity of racing as a day out for fans, new and returning. We look forward to continuing this collaboration for years to come."
Blue Light Card chief executive Tom Dalby said: "As our members continue to go above and beyond to keep our communities healthy, safe and supported, we are pleased to work alongside the Racecourse Association and Racing Together, to offer complimentary tickets for our members and their families to enjoy. We are delighted that the partnership will continue into 2023."
Outlining plans for the celebratory event on Saturday week, Doncaster's executive director Rachel Harwood said: "We will have 250 special guests in the Clock Tower Stand and it is our way of saying thank you to key workers for all that they have done in the last few years and continue to do."
