Fitzgerald pays tribute after death of Grand National winner

Mick Fitzgerald hailed Rough Quest as the horse that changed his life as he paid tribute to the Grand National winner, who has died aged 30.

Rough Quest boasted seconds in the Cheltenham Gold Cup, King George and Hennessy Gold Cup, but it was his success at Aintree in 1996 that proved the defining moment of his nine-year career.

Trained by Terry Casey and owned by Andrew Wates, Rough Quest was sent off 7-1 favourite and Fitzgerald, who rode him to four of his seven wins, said those odds soon seemed generous.
