Goodwood says error led to brief axing of historic race name

Goodwood has described as a mistake and miscommunication the initial publication of the historic Goodwood Stakes without its traditional title following the announcement of a new sponsor.

Like the opening races on Tuesday and yesterday, Wednesday's marathon handicap was originally listed as the Matchbook Betting Exchange Stakes, with Goodwood racecourse manager Alex Eade last week saying: "We have got lots and lots of heritage names which we proudly display and keep but in this instance it wasn't possible."

It did, however, become possible and the race, first run in 1823, became the Matchbook Betting Exchange Goodwood Stakes.
