Jim Goldie was yesterday still basking in the warm glow provided by Hawkeyethenoo, who on Saturday ended a four-year losing spell with a stirring success in the 7f handicap for female amateur riders at Ascot.

The ten-year-old stable stalwart got his head in front for the first time since the 2012 Stewards’ Cup off a mark 32lb lower than his peak under former three-time amateur women's champion Carol Bartley.

“It’s been a long time between drinks and I’m chuffed to bits with him,” said Goldie, who has always had a share in Hawkeyethenoo since he moved from Mick Easterby in 2009.
