A horse who has never jumped a fence in public is seldom favourite for the Cheltenham Gold Cup but then few excite like Thistlecrack, who makes his chasing debut at Chepstow today.

Eighteen fences, three miles and four rivals stand in the way of the eight-year-old, whose unbeaten hurdling campaign last season, crowned by success in the World Hurdle, has earned him quotes of no bigger than 7-1 for March’s Timico-backed Gold Cup.

It is 199 days since Thistlecrack landed his third Grade 1 of the season in the Liverpool Stayers’ Hurdle and trainer Colin Tizzard, satisfied the ground at Chepstow will be soft enough for the eight-year-old, is keen to get the show back on the road in the Aspen Waite Complete Business Growth Service Novices' Chase.
