Go-to guy: Frankie Dettori to ride Hazapour in Derby for Weld and Aga Khan

Frankie Dettori will have his first ride for the Aga Khan in Britain for well over 15 years on the biggest stage of all after being booked to ride Hazapour in the Investec Derby at Epsom a week on Saturday.

The 47-year-old is renewing an association that began when he was just 17 and an apprentice with Luca Cumani.

"It's a good ride to get and I'm looking forward to it," said Dettori. "My first ride for His Highness was in June 1988 and my first ride for him in a big race was a few months later on Roushayd, a pacemaker for Kahyasi in the Arc, when I was 17.

"My last ride in the colours was when I won a Listed race for Andre Fabre at Deauville in 2006."

With his principal trainer John Gosden set to run only Roaring Lion – the mount of Oisin Murphy – in Britain's most valuable race, Dettori was on the lookout for a spare ride and Hazapour's trainer Dermot Weld snapped him up.

Weld said: "Frankie has ridden for me a few times in the past. With our retained jockey Pat Smullen sadly out of action, we don't have a retained jockey and we decided Frankie was the obvious man to go for because of all his Epsom experience."

That experience most notably includes Derby triumphs on Authorized in 2007 and Golden Horn in 2015, and Hazapour is set to be Dettori's 23rd ride in the £1.5 million contest.

Dettori has not ridden anywhere in the famous green and red colours of the Aga Khan since before winning his first Derby, that last ride at Deauville being on Visionario.

That was a winner, while Dettori's last ride for the Aga Khan in Britain, Shersha at Sandown in September 2002, was second. He used to ride regularly for the owner in his days with Cumani, winning the Galtres Stakes on Madiriya in 1990.

Homebred Hazapour is between a 12-1 and 16-1 shot for the Derby after winning the Derrinstown-sponsored trial at Leopardstown this month on his reappearance under Declan McDonogh. Market leader is 2,000 Guineas winner Saxon Warrior at 4-6.

Ladbrokes quote 12-1 and spokeswoman Nicola McGeady said: “We saw some decent money for Hazapour after he won the Derrinstown and with Frankie booked we expect him to be popular on the day.”

Weld, like his jockey, has enjoyed Derby glory, with the Aga Khan's Harzand two years ago – and the owner is seeking a sixth victory in the Epsom Classic having also won with Shergar (1981), Shahrastani (1986), Kahyasi (1988) and Sinndar (2000).

It could be a momentous two days at Epsom for Dettori, who is also due to ride Investec Oaks favourite Lah Ti Dar and Coronation Cup market leader Cracksman, both trained by Gosden.
