If at first you don't success keep trying. Seldom has a saying been so fitting. Glencaraig Lady ran in what is now called the RSA Chase at the 1970 Cheltenham Festival and came down at the last when appearing to have the race in safe-keeping.

She returned the following year for the Gold Cup and was almost five lengths clear coming down to the third-last when crashing out –paving the way to victory for L'Escargot. But the remarkable mare made it third-time lucky as an eight-year-old as she got the better of Royal Toss in a rousing finish to the Gold Cup, with The Dikler in third.

She was ridden to victory by Frank Berry who was having his first ever ride at the festival. Two years previously she won the valuable Irish National Hunt Centenary Handicap Chase, a one-off event.
