Galway ups security for festival racegoers
Galway manager Michael Moloney has advised racegoers to be patient and allow more time than usual when trying to gain access to the festival beginning on July 31, as a heightened security presence is likely to cause delays.
Moloney has revealed that, following a review of safety procedures, a decision was made to increase security measures at Ballybrit this summer.
He said: “It’s a sign of the times we are living in and we're taking every possible precaution in light of recent events. We reviewed our security situation and decided that it was in the best interest of racegoers that we introduce these measures."
There will be more extensive bag and physical search procedures for all patrons and staff at all racecourse entrances as well as a stronger Garda presence on the grounds. Bags in excess of A4 size will not be allowed into the course and there will be no bag storage facilities.
Moloney has been in touch with major sporting venues such as Croke Park and the Aviva Stadium for guidance on the matter.
