French raider Study Of Man ruled out of Derby as Bary opts for Chantilly bid

The opposition party to Saxon Warrior for next Saturday’s Investec Derby has lost one potentially key member, with trainer Pascal Bary revealing that Study Of Man will be kept at home for the Qipco Prix du Jockey Club 24 hours later.

As short as 16-1 in places for the Epsom Classic, the Niarchos family’s impressive Prix Greffulhe winner will not be among the names confirmed for the Derby on Monday.

Study Of Man is a best-priced 11-2 second favourite for the Jockey Club, which is run over a furlong and a half less than the Derby.

“He'll run at Chantilly,” said Bary on Saturday. “We decided based on the distance, because on the dam’s side there's a lot of speed – he is from the family of Miesque – and we all felt that it is too soon for him to be stepping up to 2,400 metres [1m4f].”

Like Saxon Warrior a son of Japanese super sire Deep Impact, Study Of Man made an encouraging seasonal reappearance when chasing home Chilean in the Prix la Force on heavy ground at the beginning of April before surging into the Classic picture with a decisive win at Saint-Cloud in the Greffulhe, a race Pour Moi took en route to Epsom glory.

Bary added that Natural High, owned by Jean-Louis Bouchard, will also take his chance in the Jockey Club.
