Frankel's first juvenile of 2017 finishes second to 25-1 shot
Frankel's first two-year-old runner of 2017 could not repeat history as his son Westerland finished a promising second behind 25-1 shot Nebo on his debut at Newbury.
The John Gosden colt was bidding to give his superstar sire a second winner in this race after his first runner Cunco obliged in the 6f contest last year.
Travelling smartly throughout in the hands of Frankie Dettori, the juvenile seemed to be in contention as the race entered its closing stages but was not given a hard race and should fare better on his next appearance.
Gosden is no stranger to handling the career of a son of Frankel, as he is the trainer of Cunco, and the trainer will be hoping Westerland can follow in the footsteps of his half-brother Showcasing, who finished second on debut before winning on his next start.
Gosden said: "I was thrilled. He found the ground riding dead, but has a lot of scope and is a big strong horse. He's been working on the all-weather so hasn't seen a lot of grass, but I'm really happy.
"Sometimes I like finishing second because it means you can run in another maiden. He's very promising and we'll stay at six furlongs, but seven, a mile will be fine one day."
