Four mudlovers who will be suited by testing conditions at Chepstow and Newbury

GoingStick readings of 2.6 (chase course) and 2.5 (hurdles track) ensure it is going to be very testing ground at Chepstow for Wednesday's meeting. While heavy, soft in places is the going description at Newbury. Here are four horses who will be suited by conditions

Star Of Rory
2.40 Chepstow

This John Groucott-trained seven-year-old is the outsider of the field for the 2m3½f handicap hurdle, but is among the least likely to be affected by the underfoot conditions.

Wednesday's racecards

Star Of Rory has only encountered heavy ground twice over hurdles, winning and finishing second. Further soft ground form and the fact that he was coming to challenge when falling at the last at Warwick last time suggests that he can bounce back.

He may well have been underestimated in the market.

Little Red Lion
3.15 Chepstow

Little Red Lion has steadily climbed through the ranks since entering handicap company and all his winning form has come on soft or heavy ground.

His form figures in handicaps on this ground is 21BD11F, so conditions should be no issue.

The David Pipe-trained seven-year-old sports a tongue-tie and blinkers combination for the first time and looks a likely danger to prolific favourite Memphis Bell.

Ouro Branco
3.35 Newbury

Nigel Hawke's runner is unbeaten in two starts on heavy going so will relish today's gruelling conditions in this 2m7f handicap chase.

The eight-year-old comes here on the back of an impressive win at Wincanton on Boxing Day – where he posted a career-best RPR in similar conditions – but he was subsequently handed a 12lb hike from the handicapper.

Ouro Branco is, however, a progressive horse and another step up in distance could enhance his chances of completing a hat-trick.

3.50 Chepstow

Form figures of PFPP and an absence of 622 days suggests Sparkling River has a mammoth task in the 2m7½f mares' handicap chase, but conditions are perfect for her.

She is a two-time winner and a runner-up from three starts on heavy ground and is rated 19lb lower than when last successful in January 2018.

It will take a monumental effort on her first start since wind surgery and with cheekpieces applied, but she could be overpriced for each-way backers on her debut for Michael Scudamore.
