Ronald Wali, the former part-time work rider at Roger Charlton's yard who pleaded guilty in May to ten counts of assisting unlawful immigration to Britain, has been sentenced to five years in jail.

Wali, 45, appeared in court and took full responsibility for the running of a business that arranged for illegal immigrants to enter Britain. Upon his guilty plea the case against his wife Bharati, 41, was dropped.

Wali's abuse of the system involved bringing people into the country on paperwork claiming they had jobs within racing stables. Police found the positions never existed and the 'employers' – such as Alan King, Richard Hannon and Sylvester Kirk - were unaware of the fraud.
