Five-year wait: The Young Master could seek retribution at Wincanton on Saturday

There would be a sense of poetic justice if The Young Master was to win Saturday's Listed Badger Beers Silver Trophy Handicap Chase at Wincanton - for which he is a best-priced 12-1 with four firms.

Five years ago the Neil Mulholland-trained chaser won the race by seven lengths as a five-year-old, only to be disqualified after what the BHA described at the time as a computer systems failure meant he was declared despite being ineligible.

He had had just two prior starts over fences when the race conditions stipulated a minimum of three were required, resulting in his subsequent disqualification and Mulholland being fined £250.

Both horse and trainer have unfinished business with the race and it would be a great story if - now aged ten and a stone higher in the handicap - they could gain redemption and finally etch their names on the trophy.

But Mulholland warned anyone considering backing The Young Master for the race ante-post he has several other options and would go wherever conditions were most in his favour. He said: "We won't make up our minds until closer to the weekend.

"He's got a couple of other options, so we'll see what the weather does, what the ground conditions are like and how the races shape up and then make the decision as to where's best to go for him.

"He is entered in the veterans' chase at Sandown a day later, or he could go to Cheltenham the week after. We'll just see how it goes and go wherever we think he's got the better chance."

As for The Young Master's season targets he added: "There's the bet365, which he's won and been placed in in the past, and the staying handicap at the festival. He'll run in those good staying chases he's been running in for the last few years - anywhere where the ground's not too soft."

Mulholland has three others entered in Wincanton's Silver Trophy, with Carole's Destrier and Soupy Soups as big as 20-1 and Walt a best-priced 33-1. He added: "They're all in the same position, it depends how much rain we get. They all have other options.

"Walt could go to Taunton next week, where he's won over course and distance, Carole's Destrier is in at Sandown on Sunday as well and Soupy Soups has been running well recently. We'll probably run a couple in it, but I wouldn't be sure which ones it'll be at the minute."
