Five horses who will be suited by testing conditions at Kempton and Warwick

Lord Du Mesnil (left) and Angels Breath: sure to appreciate testing conditions on Saturday

With 34mm of rain falling at Warwick since last Saturday leaving the ground heavy, soft in places, and a further 8-12mm of rain expected to hit an already soft Kempton overnight before racing, both big-race cards are set to be held on testing ground on Saturday.

We've picked out some horses featuring on ITV who will likely relish the underfoot conditions.

Tile Tapper

Coral Racing Club Handicap Chase (1.30 Kempton)

Trainers know their horses best so when you look through the form and see 'non-runner due to unsuitable ground' when the going is 'good' then you can be sure that the horse needs softer underfoot conditions.

That is exactly the case for Tile Tapper, whose only run on good ground resulted in a 50-length defeat and who has subsequently been scratched twice when declared on that ground.

Trained by Chris Honour, Tile Tapper followed an emphatic victory on heavy ground at Chepstow in February with two seconds on slightly quicker ground in his starts this season, including here on his last start, and could notch another win now returned to his preferred conditions.

Angels Breath

Coral Silviniaco Conti Chase (2.05 Kempton)

Having not been seen for 1,121 days there may be a concern over the fitness of Angels Breath, but there certainly won't be an issue when it comes to the going.

The nine-year-old has had only four starts on soft or worse, which have resulted in three wins and a seventh, when tried in the 2019 Supreme Novices' Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival.

The second of his two victories over fences was by 23 lengths on heavy ground, with the first achieved by eight lengths over subsequent Grade 1 scorer First Flow on soft ground, so conditions here look ideal for his return.

Petit Tonnerre

Coral Lanzarote Handicap Hurdle (2.40 Kempton)

Petit Tonnerre may look slightly misplaced given that he has finished second and third on good ground on his last two starts, but the return to soft ground will help him get back to winning ways.

Before joining Jonjo O'Neill, Petit Tonnerre won two of his three starts in France, with both victories coming over hurdles in soft or very soft conditions, and he also won on his first British start at Market Rasen, again on soft ground.

The JP McManus-owned five-year-old has looked outpaced before staying on again in both his starts this season since being upped in trip, but the return to softer conditions may slow everything down for him and could see him produce a career-best performance.

Lord Du Mesnil

Wigley Group Classic Handicap Chase (3.00 Warwick)

This marathon test is going to take some getting, but one who is not only proven to love heavy ground but is also certain to get the trip is Lord Du Mesnil.

He has recorded four of his top ten Racing Post Ratings when running on heavy ground, with the other six all achieved when the going was soft, and he has two wins in 3m4½f handicaps, in soft ground, to his name.

He ran into subsequent Coral Gold Cup winner Le Milos when second at Bangor on his last start in November, in heavy ground, and he remains 3lb below his last winning mark.

Lieutenant Rocco

Pertemps Network Handicap Hurdle (3.35 Warwick)

Having been out of form for the last couple of years, Lieutenant Rocco might not be the most obvious contender but his record on heavy ground speaks for itself.

The eight-year-old is very lightly raced and has three wins to his name from 12 starts, with all of those victories achieved when the going was described as heavy (two hurdles and one chase) and his only blip on this ground coming when pulled up after a 353-day break.

He hasn't shown much in three starts for Syd Hosie but he easily won two novice hurdles when trained by Colin Tizzard, who felt he was good enough for a crack at the Albert Bartlett Novices' Hurdle at Cheltenham, and the extra distance coupled with the heavy conditions here might just spark him into life.
