Five horses to note from the three-day Irish Derby festival at the Curragh

1. David's Charm

Those of you who backed Davids Charm in the concluding handicap at the Curragh on Saturday must be wondering what you did to deserve such rotten luck but, fear not, compensation could be on its way in less than a month's time.

The versatile eight-year-old would surely have won the 2m handicap, and possibly won it convincingly, had every avenue Chris Hayes explored not closed on him. He was beaten just over a length and my guess is that the lack of a clear run cost him at least three lengths.

The handicapper cannot be too harsh on him, given he only finished third, so the Connacht Hotel Handicap for amateur riders on the opening evening of the Galway summer festival would look an ideal target.

He is rated 83 and, if John Joe Walsh can get a good amateur, he should take some stopping. This is a seriously well-treated handicapper.

2. Beckford

The form book tells you Beckford finished fifth in the Listed Dash Stakes on Irish Derby day but the replay will tell you the bare result doesn't even tell half the story.

The 2017 Railway Stakes winner looks like he retains plenty of the ability he showed at two and who knows what would have happened if Colin Keane had not been frustrated time and time again inside the final two furlongs.

Beckford travelled like the best horse in the race and, despite all the traffic congestion and being eased down close home, he was still only a length and a half behind the classy Speak In Colours at the finish. He can win a stakes race this season when things fall into place.

3. Ice Cold In Alex

The Ken Condon-trained five-year-old is always a hostage to fortune given his running style but luck certainly deserted him in the 7f handicap on Friday.

The ease with which he travelled through the contest suggests he is capable of striking off a mark in the low 80s, but daylight arrived too late for Niall McCullagh last week, and the winning post came a few strides too early. Another valuable handicap looks within his grasp over the coming weeks.

4. Orvar

While it would be foolish to say he would have won the Rockingham with a smoother passage, Orvar was unable to show his true colours in the second half of the race and his effort can be upgraded.

Watch Orvar finish fourth in the Rockingham

Rated as high as 101 in Meydan in January, Orvar has crept down to a mark of 91 that could be exploited in the next few weeks.

Leigh Roche was located towards the stands' side rail for most of the sprint but had to change course from the two-furlong marker and ended up out in the middle of the track. There was little room to manoeuvre in the closing stages and the fact he was only beaten two lengths despite all that tells you all you need to know.

5. Flight Risk

The evergreen eight-year-old was sent off favourite for the Listed Celebration Stakes but his winning run came to an end as he could only finish fifth, and that became sixth in the stewards' room afterwards as Nebo was promoted ahead of him.

The race did not go to plan for Kevin Manning who was forced to switch course on numerous occasions throughout the final two furlongs. He was only beaten a length and a half at the line. His winning spree might not be over just yet.
