Find the next Minella Indo for points spree when making Ten To Follow transfers

Points make prizes when it comes to the Tote Ten To Follow but that does not necessarily mean players should put all their focus into targeting only the 25-point Grade 1s throughout the season.

With the transfer window open and the chance to bring two new horses to their stable, players should also remember that a horse’s Tote win dividend is taken into account in allocating points.

The Cheltenham Festival is prone to throwing up big-priced winners, often in the biggest races, so finding the value in those races could yield big points.

Take the Coral Cup, in which four of the last six winners returned a Tote win dividend over £25. Coupled with the place returns and the 15 points for a Grade 3 success, Supasundae (51.5 points), Bleu Berry (57.1) and William Henry (64) would have earned serious Ten To Follow points.

Supasundae and William Henry went on to run well in the Grade 1 Liverpool Hurdle at Aintree, so if players can find a Grade 1 horse lurking in a handicap there are big points to be had.

Big Tote returns and therefore points are not exclusive to the handicaps at Cheltenham though. Three of the last five Stayers' Hurdle winners have proved relative upsets. With everything taken into account, Cole Harden, Nichols Canyon and Penhill would all have returned more than 60 points for their victories.

If Paisley Park looks vulnerable to you, then bringing your Stayers' Hurdle dark horse into your Ten To Follow stable could be a wise move.

For the biggest Tote returns at the festival, this year’s horses will have to go some to surpass the tally Minella Indo would have earned for his Albert Bartlett win last season.

While Henry de Bromhead’s gelding was a 50-1 shot with the bookmakers, a £129.50 Tote win return would have helped players to 175.9 points – nearly halfway to the total of our current leaderboard topper.
