Racing was delayed by 50 minutes at Huntingdon on Tuesday evening after conditional jockey Fergus Gregory was knocked unconscious in a heavy fall in the 2m handicap hurdle.

Gregory was riding The Blue Bomber in the race landed by Stuccodor when the six-year-old suffered a fatal fall at the fifth.

Racecourse medical staff quickly attended the stricken Gregory and a delay to racing followed as the air ambulance was called, but later cancelled after the rider had regained consciousness.

He was taken by road to Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge for further examination and x-rays while the delayed 6.40 race eventually went off at 7.30.

Gregory's boss, trainer Olly Murphy, told the Racing Post: "I understand Fergus was knocked out for several minutes in the very nasty looking incident, but fortunately regained consciousness and he has been taken to hospital by ambulance."

As a consequence of the delay, the hunter chase, which had been due to close the card at 8.40, was abandoned.

Later on Tuesday evening, Murphy issued a further update on Twitter, which read: "Thank you for all your well wishes for Fergus Gregory after his horrible fall @Huntingdon_Race tonight. He's stable in hospital with a small bleed above his brain. He is in good hands and doctors are happy with the progress he's made. Well done @Huntingdon_Race for your help."
