Last week's St Leger marked 25 years since Pat Eddery brought Silver Patriarch home a decisive winner of the race, a landmark victory for a couple of reasons. It was the 4,000th winner of his much-decorated career but would also prove to be the last of his 14 British Classics before he retired in 2003 and went on to suffer a tragic fall from grace.

Silver Patriarch's trainer, John Dunlop, had enjoyed a long association with Eddery, who had ridden his first winner for Dunlop back in 1973.

"That was a special day," Dunlop reminisced years later. "For Silver Patriarch to come back from being beaten a nose in the Derby and win the St Leger, and for it to be Pat's 4,000th winner, made it particularly memorable. Pat rode nearly 400 winners for me over 30 years. That says it all."
