My ex-girlfriend Liz contacted me on Facebook Messenger last week. I knew it wouldn’t be good news. Mickie had to be put down. Steve, the first rescue dog we got together (against all of my protestations), succumbed to old age six years ago. It was now Mickie’s turn.

They reckon that 20 is about 140 in dog years and, although I felt Liz’s pain all the way from Montpellier, I was grateful. Like her fellow rescue dog Steve, Mickie combined astounding longevity with a yearning for love that is only apparent in those we save from the
worst of humankind.
