10 Heartbreak City (2016)

To emphasise the changing nature of the racing world, Heartbreak City was the second Ebor winner (after Purple Moon in 2007) to finish runner-up in the Melbourne Cup the same year, but in a reassuringly retro manner he landed an old-fashioned ante-post punt for shrewd Irish connections who had taken the Guinness Handicap Hurdle at Galway with the fast-improving gelding a few weeks earlier.

Trainer Tony Martin added the finishing touches to the plot by putting up 5lb claimer Adam McNamara, declaring his effort "sheer brilliance" as the partnership waited off a steady early pace before pouncing for a convincing success.

9 Mudawin (2006)

Already a winner off a 2lb higher mark and successful on two of his previous four runs, perhaps shock winner Mudawin was spurred on by indignation at the length of his starting price, but having finished lame and last on his most recent outing he was sent off at 100-1.
