Ten seismic moments from 2022 - and how their impact will be felt for years

2022 was full of big moments in racing, both on the racecourse and off it, but only some of them will have played a part in shaping the sport's future. Here, Peter Scargill picks out ten events from the last 12 months that hold long-term significance for racing.


1. A four-runner Grade 1 at the Cheltenham Festival – and no Brits

The Cheltenham Festival is one of racing's greatest showcases. More than 250,000 spectators make their way to Prestbury Park in mid-March to watch the best horses, trainers and jockeys from Britain and Ireland compete in races that have been built up for months.

Such is the popularity of the meeting that talk of extending it has never been far away (it has already happened once, after all) and, in April, the Jockey Club, the owner of Cheltenham, announced a consultation would take place into adding a fifth day.
