Waley-Cohen richly rewarded for staking career finale on a 50-1 National novice

The smart thing to do, if you're a jump jockey who's had enough, is to say so a couple of days in advance, giving the Racing Gods time to arrange a valedictory success for you. It worked for Peter Scudamore at Ascot in 1993, Tony Dobbin at Carlisle in 2008 and now, in slightly more competitive circumstances, it has worked for Sam Waley-Cohen.

Of course, Scu and Dobbs made their exits aboard favourites. For his big finale, Waley-Cohen was relying on a 50-1 seven-year-old novice chaser in the Randox Grand National, a formula which might be described as unpromising.
