Tributes to 'our superstar' after Spearing stalwart's fatal injury

John Spearing has recalled with pride the career of stable favourite Hawk Moth, who sadly succumbed to injuries sustained at Lingfield last Saturday.

The eight-year-old, who scored four of his eight wins at Brighton, was revealed to have suffered an irreparable knee injury in the 7f handicap.

"He didn't pull up lame and, while his blood was up, he didn't show anything for about ten minutes," says Spearing. "By the time he left the racecourse stables he was uncomfortable and when we got him home we had him x-rayed. It became obvious it was not only career-ending but, realistically, life-ending."
