With each of the 23 two-year-old debutants who ran at the Qatar Goodwood Festival last week coming up short, the record of juvenile newcomers at the meeting in the last five seasons, including this one, is now a strikingly poor one winner from 128 runners, for a £1 level-stakes loss of £120.50.

The only success was provided by Misleading, who won a 6f maiden at the first time of asking at 13-2 in 2014 for trainer Peter Chapple-Hyam.

This dearth of success reflects the competitiveness of Glorious Goodwood’s two-year-old maidens – the vast majority of unraced juveniles who appear at this meeting run in these races – and how the Sussex Downs course’s undulations make it a challenging track for a newcomer.
