Tom O’Ryan remembered by press-room colleagues
Brightening your day with turf tales from beyond the tracks
Tom O’Ryan may no longer be with us but his memory is still very much alive.
Many a current jockey and trainer owes plenty to the advice or coaching of the Racing Post reporter and HWPA journalist of the year, who died in 2016.
And dinner was on him at York last week thanks to his generous bequest of money to fund a meal for former colleagues in the northern press room.
Those toasting his memory at an event organised by close-up writer Joe Rowntree included past and present Post journalists Tim Richards, Colin Russell and David Carr, commentator Malcolm Tomlinson and O’Ryan’s fellow Racing UK presenter Peter Naughton.
Red Rum celebration
The Osborne Studio Gallery in London is launching a nostalgic exhibition showcasing rare and unseen photographs of Britain’s most famous racehorse – the legendary three-time Grand National winner Red Rum.
From April 9 to 18, jumps fans can travel back in time to a rich chapter of racing history and view images by photographer Jeremy Hoare, taking visitors behind the scenes with Rummy, including his Southport home alongside trainer Donald McCain and head lad Billy Ellison.
Hoare, who photographed racing royalty such as Mill Reef and Grundy during his award-winning career, has also released a book of the images, capturing the spirit of the 1970s alongside one of the decade’s sporting icons and describing his first-hand relationship with this legendary horse.
Red Rum by Jeremy Hoare (£18.99) will be available to purchase at the exhibition, or at racingpost.com/shop
