There’s no race quite like it. Year in, year out, the Grand National adds another layer to its legend and mystique, the thrill of the spectacle invariably accompanied by an engaging narrative. It is only with the benefit of hindsight that you see all the angles, all the nuances, all the elements of the human drama involved in how this unique horserace is played out.
This time the plotlines involved a tigerish little Flat-bred horse who had conquered the Cheltenham Festival and would now do the same at Aintree, a jockey achieving the ultimate redemption with the team that once sacked him, another rider who missed out on the horse he had done so much to nurture and a heavyweight clash between the titans of Irish training, all wrapped up in one of the National’s tightest finishes. It was quite a story.
